protect eyes during fallWhen you have cataracts, you may see the world as though looking in a foggy mirror or through a smudged window. Over time, what may seem like a minor issue can worsen into a significant problem; cataracts progress and important functions are impacted. You may no longer be able to drive or fully participate in work, reading, and hobbies. Without treatment, they can cause blindness. At Asheville Vision Associates, we understand the importance of vision when it comes to your quality of life. Our experienced team can diagnose and treat cataracts so you can enjoy life on your terms.

"Cataract" refers to the clouding of the eye's lens; in people over 40, it is the most common cause of vision loss and the number one cause of blindness worldwide. You may notice blurred vision, double vision, excessive light sensitivity, trouble seeing at night, and viewing bright colors as yellowish or faded.

Age is a big factor in the development of cataracts. At age 40, proteins in the lens begin to break down; many people do not have any symptoms until much later, typically around age 60. Other factors include genetics, medical conditions like diabetes, eye injuries, radiation treatments on the upper body, excessive sun exposure, smoking, drinking, and long-term use of corticosteroids.

Asheville Vision Associates will diagnose cataracts via a thorough eye exam, pupil dilation, and pertinent tests, such as visual acuity. If you do have cataracts, we will discuss next steps for treatment. The only way to remove cataracts is through surgery. If your situation is not severe as yet and you choose to wait to remove cataracts, we can assist by prescribing new glasses/lenses to correct vision changes and/or prescribing eye drops. We highly recommend surgery as it is safe and effective; 9/10 people realize vastly improved vision.

If you are over 60 and/or think you have cataracts, please schedule a consultation today. We can give you the diagnosis you need in order to take the best next steps for your vision and health.
