Advanced Diagnostic Technology

At Asheville Vision and Wellness, we've invested in cutting-edge diagnostic equipment to provide the most accurate assessments possible. Our advanced technology allows us to detect eye diseases earlier and monitor them more precisely than ever before.

Our state-of-the-art equipment includes:

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) – Takes detailed cross-sectional pictures of your retina to diagnose and monitor eye diseases
  • Optomap Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging – Captures more than 80% of your retina in one panoramic image to detect early signs of retinal disease
  • Macular Pigment Density Test (MPOD) – Checks how much protective pigment is in your macula to assess your risk for age-related macular degeneration
  • Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) – Measures how well your eye communicates with your brain, which is crucial for determining if vision is developing normally
  • AdaptDx Pro – Allows early detection of age-related macular degeneration up to three years earlier than other tests

These advanced technologies allow us to see details of your eye health that would be impossible to detect with traditional examination methods alone. Many of these tests are quick, non-invasive, and painless, providing us with critical information about your eye health in just minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have an eye exam?

Most adults should have a comprehensive eye examination every one to two years, depending on age, risk factors, and whether you wear corrective lenses. Adults over 60, people with diabetes, those with a family history of eye disease, and anyone with existing eye conditions should be examined annually or as recommended by their optometrist.

What's the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

Optometrists are primary eye care providers who perform comprehensive eye examinations, prescribe glasses and contact lenses, diagnose and treat many eye conditions, and manage ocular diseases. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye surgery and treating complex eye diseases. Our optometrists handle the vast majority of eye care needs and refer to ophthalmologists when surgery is required.

Do you accept vision insurance?

Yes, we work with most major vision insurance plans. We encourage you to bring your insurance information to your appointment so we can verify your benefits and help you maximize your coverage.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring a current list of medications, your vision insurance card and photo ID, any glasses or contact lenses you currently wear, and a list of questions or concerns you'd like to discuss. If you have medical insurance and are being seen for a medical eye problem, bring that information as well.
