Choosing an eye doctor is a decision most people make once and then keep for decades. Asheville Vision and Wellness has held that place for families across western North Carolina since 1989. Three optometrists practice at our Arden office, where a full diagnostic suite and an on-site finishing lab let us handle your exam, your testing, and your glasses without sending you anywhere else. Patients drive to 559 Long Shoals Road from across Buncombe and Henderson counties, and they find us easily at exit 37 off I-26. They come for care that is thorough, unrushed, and built on technology that catches problems early.
Why Patients Choose Us as Their Eye Doctor
The practice was built on a simple idea: an eye exam should tell you something meaningful about your health, not just hand you a new prescription. Our optometrists are trained and certified in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular disease, and every exam is customized to your individual needs rather than run from a script.
Here is what sets the experience apart:
- Three doctors under one roof, so you can find the right personality and communication style for you and your family
- Advanced diagnostic imaging used as part of routine care, not reserved for emergencies
- An on-site optical finishing lab, which means your prescription is verified in house and turnaround times stay short
- A 4.8-star average rating across nearly 1,000 patient reviews
- Gus, our therapy dog, who greets patients at the door and has a talent for calming nerves
We are also proud of how long our patients stay with us. Many families have seen the same doctor for well over a decade, and some now bring their grandchildren. You can read what patients have said in their own words on our testimonials page.

What Happens During Your Exam
A comprehensive exam here typically runs longer than what many patients are used to, because we gather more information. Depending on your age, symptoms, and risk factors, your doctor may perform some or all of the following:
- Visual acuity and refraction to fine-tune your prescription
- Tonometry to measure internal eye pressure, one risk factor for glaucoma
- Slit lamp examination of the front and interior structures of the eye
- Visual field testing to check for blind spots in peripheral vision
- Optomap ultra-widefield retinal imaging, which captures more than 80 percent of the retina in a single panoramic image
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for cross-sectional views of the retina
Your doctor will walk you through the images and results on screen. Patients often tell us this is the first time anyone has actually shown them their own retina and explained what they are looking at. Our full list of instruments and tests is available on our vision technology page.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I see my eye doctor?
Most adults benefit from an annual comprehensive exam. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or a family history of eye disease, your doctor may recommend more frequent visits.
Do you take my insurance?
We work with a range of medical and vision plans. Because coverage details change often, the fastest way to confirm your benefits is to call our office at (828) 747-9260 or check our insurance page.
Can I use my FSA or HSA funds here?
Yes. Eye exams, prescription eyewear, and many of our diagnostic services are eligible expenses. Many patients schedule in the fourth quarter to use benefits before they reset on January 1.
Do you perform LASIK surgery?
We provide LASIK evaluations, co-management, and post-operative examinations. Surgery itself is performed by our referral partner, Woolfson Eye Institute, whose team has completed more than 100,000 LASIK procedures.
What if I already have frames I like?
Bring them in. Our opticians can assess whether your existing frames will safely accept new lenses, and our on-site lab handles the work in house.
Is there really a dog in the office?
There is. Gus is our therapy dog, and he takes his job seriously. You can read about him on our therapy dog page.
