Our office sits at 559 Long Shoals Road in Arden, a straight shot down I-26 to Exit 37. Patients tell us the drive pays for itself the first time they see how much ground a real exam covers.
Comprehensive Eye Care for Neighborhoods North of Downtown
Asheville Vision and Wellness is home to three optometrists: Dr. Sid Morse, Dr. Lisa M. Greene, and Dr. Adam Greene. All three are trained in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of ocular disease, which means most of what you need happens under one roof rather than through a chain of referrals.
Dr. Morse has practiced in the Asheville area since 1989 and has provided eye care on mission trips across Africa, Europe, South America, and Central America. Dr. Lisa Greene joined the practice in 1996 and built her philosophy around teaching patients how overall health shapes vision across a lifetime. Dr. Adam Greene grew up in the mountains of North Carolina and returned home to practice after earning his optometry degree at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
You can learn more about each doctor and our full team on our staff page.
Comprehensive Eye Exams Built Around You
No two sets of eyes need the same exam. Our comprehensive eye exams are customized to your history, your symptoms, and your risk factors, and they screen for far more than whether your prescription has changed.
Depending on your needs, your exam may include screening for:
- Macular degeneration and glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Cataracts and corneal irritation
- Dry eye disease
- Blind spots in peripheral vision
- Color vision deficiency
- Crossed eyes or amblyopia in children
- Visual acuity and refractive error
We take time to walk through results with you. Understanding what a scan shows is what turns a routine appointment into a real plan for protecting your sight.
Advanced Diagnostic Technology
Early detection changes outcomes. Many sight-threatening conditions develop quietly, which is why we invest in advanced vision technology rather than relying on a chart and a bright light.
Testing You May Encounter During Your Visit
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): cross-sectional images of the retina used to diagnose and monitor macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy
- Optomap Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging: a panoramic digital image capturing more than 80 percent of the retina
- Macular Pigment Density Test (MPOD): measures protective pigment in the macula, a known risk factor for age-related macular degeneration
- Visual Fields and Tonometry: check for blind spots and measure internal eye pressure
- Pachymetry: measures corneal thickness, an important early indicator in glaucoma detection
- Rabin Cone Contrast Test (RCCT): an advanced color vision test sensitive to subtle changes caused by glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration
The RCCT is one of our newer additions and one we are genuinely excited about. It measures how each type of cone cell in your retina responds to color, and it can flag disease earlier than many traditional methods. We use it alongside OCT, ERG, and visual field testing for the most thorough disease detection available to us. This test is billed to medical insurance.
FAA Color Vision Testing for Pilots
Our RCCT technology also includes the FAA-approved version of the test. If you are pursuing a pilot's license or need follow-up color vision certification for medical certification purposes, we can perform it here. The FAA color vision test is $150 and is not covered by insurance.
Medical Eye Care and Disease Management
A great many patients arrive assuming they need a surgeon for a medical eye problem. In most cases, they do not. Our optometrists provide medical testing and ongoing management for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, dry eye, and other ocular conditions.
We also provide medical treatment for eye infections, inflammation, allergies, foreign bodies, and dry eye syndrome. If you wake up with a red, painful eye, call us at (828) 747-9260 rather than heading to urgent care. We do our best to see urgent cases quickly.
Diabetes and Your Eyes
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness among adults in the United States. People with diabetes are 40 percent more likely to develop glaucoma and 60 percent more likely to develop cataracts, often at younger ages. Retinopathy caused by diabetes accounts for 12 percent of new blindness cases.
Blurry vision, floating spots, flashing lights, eye pain, or dark patches all warrant prompt attention. Our diabetes eye health program focuses on catching vascular changes before they affect function.
Dry Eye Relief
Mountain air, heating systems, screens, medications, and natural aging all contribute to dry eye. Our dry eye treatment options range from prescription drops and punctal plugs to LipiFlow, a warm heat and gentle massage treatment that clears blockages in the meibomian glands so they can resume producing the oil your tear film needs.
Relief for Headaches and Eye Strain
About two out of three people experience some degree of eye misalignment, and the shift toward remote and hybrid work has pushed that number higher. Misalignment often shows up as headaches, neck pain, and screen fatigue rather than blurry vision, so it goes undiagnosed for years.
Neurolens uses contoured prism to address that misalignment directly. It is one of the services our patients mention most often in reviews. We also offer BrainTap in office, a guided brain fitness program for patients dealing with high stress, poor sleep, and low energy.
Eyewear, Contacts, and Our On-Site Lab
Our opticians handle everything from straightforward single-vision lenses to complex prescriptions, and our on-site finishing lab means we can verify that your eyeglasses match exactly what your doctor prescribed.
Frame lines we carry include Tom Ford, Silhouette, Maui Jim, Ray-Ban, Oakley, Lafont, Kate Spade, Jimmy Choo, OGI, Shwood, Tura, Dolabany, Zyloware, and Westgroup. We are also the exclusive Western North Carolina source for Evil Eye sports glasses, available in prescription strength for cyclists, runners, and golfers.
For contact lenses, we carry daily disposables, multifocals, and toric lenses for astigmatism from Acuvue, Alcon, Bausch + Lomb, and CooperVision, backed by our satisfaction guarantee. We also stock prescription safety eyewear for work and recreation, plus nutritional supplements including MacuHealth, EyePromise, and HydroEye through our eye health counseling program.
Care for the Whole Family
We see adults, seniors, and children. For kids, we generally examine patients age five and up and can handle basic pediatric exams, though we are not pediatric specialists and do not have specialized equipment or training for more advanced pediatric cases. If your child needs subspecialty care, we will tell you honestly and help point you in the right direction.
One more thing worth mentioning: our therapy dog, Gus, is often on the floor greeting patients. He shows up in our testimonials more often than some of our technology does.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is your office from neighborhoods north of downtown Asheville?
We are located at 559 Long Shoals Road in Arden, accessible from I-26 at Exit 37. Most patients coming from the Woodfin and Merrimon Avenue area reach us in roughly 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Directions are available on our contact page.
Do I need an ophthalmologist instead of an optometrist?
For the vast majority of eye care needs, no. Our optometrists are certified in diagnosing, treating, and managing ocular disease. Surgery is the primary exception. We provide LASIK and cataract surgery evaluations along with post-operative care, referring surgical candidates to Woolfson Eye Institute.
What insurance do you accept?
We work with a range of vision and medical insurance plans. Current details are listed on our insurance page, and our front desk is happy to verify coverage before your visit.
Can I bring my own frames for new lenses?
In many cases, yes. Our opticians will inspect your existing frames to confirm they can safely accept new lenses, and our in-house lab handles the work.
How often should I have an eye exam?
Most adults benefit from an annual comprehensive exam. If you have diabetes, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or another ongoing condition, your doctor may recommend a more frequent schedule.
